Ground Source Heat Pumps (a.k.a. – GEOTHERMAL)These units use the earth or ground water (or both) as the sources of heat in the winter, and as the “sink” for heat heat removed from the home in the summer. For this reason, ground-source heat pumps have become known as earth energy systems, or GEOTHERMAL. Imagine enjoying a comfortable home just by tapping into the energy already present in your own backyard! Heat is removed from the earth by using a liquid, such as ground water; the liquid’s temperature is raised by the heat pump, and the heat is transferred to indoor air. During summer months, the process is reversed: heat is taken from indoor air and transferred to the earth by the ground water. Did You Know? Geothermal Systems can now be qualified under Canada’s Energy Star High Efficiency Initiative |
Ground source heat pump systems (GEOTHERMAL) can be used with forced air and hydronic heating systems. They can be designed for ‘heating only’, or ‘heating with passive cooling’. A ground source heat pump system or GEOTHERMAL system will cost approximately 50% more to install than a conventional heating system, but has the ability to save you up to 60% on your annual heating costs, depending on the system you presently have in place. With energy prices on the rise, the expected payback could be anywhere from 5 – 7 years, which is why so many people are considering and installing this technology in their homes and businesses. Advantages of Geothermal Heat Pumps: - safe, clean operation with no flues, no flame and environmentally friendly
- can save up to 60% on operating costs over traditional systems
- provides virtually free hot water
Disavantages of Geothermal Heat Pumps: - installation costs can be prohibitive (Kerr Smart Financing™ can relieve you of this problem)
Kerr has taken the lead with this technology and is proud to be an “earth energy partner with many certified ground source heat pump technicians. It’s important to note that a certified geothermal technician will carry the IGSHPA designation, which indicates that they have invested time and learning into this technology in order to install your system properly. When technicians want technical assistance and products pertaining to geothermal technology they come to Kerr. We are an exclusive distributor of FHP (Florida Heat Pumps) in Atlantic Canada. These products, based on their performance, efficiency and warranty, give them official status as part of our Kerr Smart Energy™ product line up.
